Louise and her husband bought the property with the intention of a complete renovation and extension. The house’s existing layout, divided into small, separate rooms, presented an opportunity to create a single, multifunctional space that flowed effortlessly into the garden.
“We knew we wanted to fully renovate the house and extend it,” Louise explains. “The house had good bones but needed a lot of work.” Their initial vision was clear: an open-plan space to accommodate their bustling family life and allow for effortless entertaining. “We’d previously had an open-plan kitchen and knew it worked really well for family life,” says Louise. “We wanted a big island for entertaining while still being in the kitchen, lots of storage, and a space that looked nice as well.”
Collaborating with Tom Howley
The couple discovered Tom Howley kitchens on Instagram and were immediately drawn to the aesthetic and quality. “We visited the showroom in Harrogate, and the quality and attention to detail stood out,” Louise recalls. “They understood our vision and weren’t just pushing their brand’s ideas on us.” After visiting various kitchen suppliers, the decision was clear. The collaboration began with a comprehensive meeting to understand the family’s needs and lifestyle. “They really listened to how we used the kitchen, whether we hosted dinner parties or cooked a lot,” says Louise. “They then drew up plans and challenged our ideas to ensure functionality.”
Overcoming Challenges
Renovating an entire house, including an extension, meant designing a kitchen for a space that didn’t yet exist. This posed unique challenges and exciting possibilities. “We originally planned a window where the oven now stands,” Louise recalls. “Tom Howley’s expert advice helped us create a more efficient layout, prompting us to adjust our building plans.” Precision was paramount, and close collaboration between the builders and Tom Howley’s team ensured a perfect fit when it came to the install. With two young children at the time, the family moved out during this busy phase. Louise adds, “The installation process was smooth, with the Tom Howley team keeping us informed and addressing any small issues swiftly along the way.”
“It’s made all the usual events, birthdays, Christmases, and family gatherings a lot more special and memorable. But I would also say that it’s made everyday experiences a little bit more special too. ”

Designing the Dream Kitchen
From the outset, the couple had a clear vision for the look and feel of their new kitchen. “We wanted a timeless design that wouldn’t jar with any future changes,” Louise explains. With this in mind they chose our Hartford collection for its beautifully understated yet classic look. The abundance of natural light in the space made a neutral palette the perfect choice, complementing the rest of the house. They selected our calming colour, Tansy, for the main cabinetry and Nightshade for the island, providing a hint of contrast while maintaining a versatile backdrop that could be enhanced with vibrant accessories or textured elements for a layered look.
“The material selection process with Tom Howley was thorough and enjoyable – we were very involved,” Louise says. “Seeing everything together in the showroom made it easy to visualise our choices.” As well as a neutral palette, the couple knew they wanted to incorporate warm natural elements, and one area where this is visible is the beautiful breakfast pantry with its oak internal finish. The solid butcher’s block on the island has also become a favourite for its practical and aesthetic appeal. “Both features have been flawlessly executed, making the kitchen feel more homey and inviting,” Louise notes.
A Life Transformed
The new kitchen has genuinely transformed the family’s lifestyle. “We now spend over 90% of our time in this space,” Louise shares. “It’s perfect for family life, allowing the kids to do homework or watch TV while we cook.” The open-plan design also makes entertaining effortless and enjoyable. “We host kids’ parties, friends, and family, and it’s much less stressful with this space,” she adds.
As well as meeting their everyday family needs, the space now embodies the family’s timeless style. “We love interiors that are calm and inviting,” Louise explains. “The kitchen now offers a beautifully understated backdrop that perfectly complements our personal touches.” The craftsmanship is exceptional, ensuring the kitchen remains as functional and elegant as ever. “It’s performing just as well now as it did when it was first installed,” she says.
Lasting Impressions
Louise and her family couldn’t be happier with their new hub of the home. “The process felt special and seamless. Working with Tom Howley was a great experience, and we love our kitchen. It has truly transformed our home and lifestyle.” she says. The couple’s experience with Tom Howley has been so positive that they have already recommended the brand to friends, who are now also proud owners of a Tom Howley kitchen.
We would like to thank Louise and her family for their generosity in sharing their inspiring story and allowing us to be a part of the remarkable transformation of their home.
